Have you ever tried sketching instead of taking pictures of all the beautiful places you visit?
These drawings can be just as full of memories, and even more personal as you draw in your own style.
– A sketch can be seen as a fast drawing to show an object, person or scene and it is used a lot within the creative field
to express an idea.
Since when I was younger, I went for a 6 km bike ride to get to the closest library from the village where I was born. In the library, I would look for books that explained how to draw because I really wanted to learn how to draw. After this, I just drew a lot of people. In my education and free time, I also continued to draw a lot. I found out in the summer of 2021 that I really like to document my travels in little sketchbooks. I would just sketch the places, objects and people that I traveled with.
This is how I started to sketch more and more. I think it is really important as a creative person to just sketch freely and not think about if it needs to be pretty. If you for example sketch 2 times everyday in your 1,5 week vacation you kind of force yourself to sketch. I can see that I have become much better at sketching when I compare my sketchbook from 2021 to 2022. If you like sketching you should really try this out.
Draw what you think stands out.

Of Course I’m also making sketches in Bodø since I will be here for a long time for my internship. I want to collect memories I can look back to when I’m back home in the Netherlands. First, I like to sketch something really fast, and then I would go to a coffee shop to enjoy some time with myself and do my most favorite hobby! I take a picture of the angle I made with the drawing to add more details when I’m more focussed at the coffee shop. It’s better to add more details to the sketch inside a warm place because it can be really cold outside for the fingers.
Sketching or drawing gives you the ability to be more creative, improve your skill, communicate better with others, relax without being on electronics, have more focus. The brain produces positive brain chemistry like Serotonin, Endorphins, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine during this. I also noticed that it makes me more aware of my surroundings, if I see something I find really pretty while traveling I really want to capture that. I try to put my emotion in it but that can be difficult sometimes. But through practice and seeing other peoples work you can be really inspired.
It can be a big challenge to just start sketching when you are not used to sketching a lot. To start you should expose yourself to artists you really like. You can try to make an outline of the artwork. Draw what you think stands out. For example, you see an artwork of a mountain with a tree and only sketch the tree. Or try to create the whole artwork yourself.
I recommend bringing your sketchbook with a pencil and pen everywhere you go. Are you enjoying time with your friends or family and you’re just chilling with each other? You could try to draw them. I do want to remind you that it doesn’t need to be perfect. To just practice is a really good exercise. You can also go outside, where a lot of people are and draw people that are sitting long in the same place. This is a good option if you don’t like to immediately draw people who are close to you. And you could always try to observe nature (clouds, trees, rocks, ect.), objects to draw (a cup of coffee, lamps, shoes, etc.) and scenery.
