Before I will be talking about how to dress for winter here I want to mention one more thing. The weather in Bodø and northern Norway is crazy. The summer is not long and you won’t know when is the best time to visit. This is because you can experience all seasons, in each season. For example, in the summer you would think it is going to be great weather but you never know. Suddenly, it is 15 degrees and it switches to 5 degrees, and this can be really cold.
The winter is long here as you can see by the sub title. So, it is important to have warm clothes when you will be here in this season. Also, Bodø is really windy and rainy so a jacket that can handle this is essential. If it is really snowy or rainy and you are going to walk to Seria, it is good to have shoes that handle this weather. For being outside it is good to have a beanie, scarf and mittens. Since in the winter it is dark really long, it is good to have reflective bands. This will help you to stay more safe while walking in the dark with cars or bikers.
You can just wear jeans, a sweater or shirts with long sleeves. Wear high socks in your shoes to keep it warm. You can dress casual but proper.
The clothing on a ski day is almost the same as a hike day, maybe add an extra layer of wool if it is really cold. The equipment you need depends if you are going to do downhill skiing or cross-country skiing. Do not worry, you do not have to bring your own skies. It is really easy to rent the right equipment here. You can rent equipment for free at Bua which is located in Bodø If you are going to ski in Vestvatn, they have a package of everything you need, it is possible to rent this for some money. As a student, you get a discount.
It is really important to dress right for a good hike. The first layer of clothing is the merino wool. This wool will keep you warm and this is really important in the winter. Microfleece and wool materials are the best materials in holding the heat and eliminating moisture. The second layer is the insulated jacket and for on the legs ski pants. The third layer is a shell jacket, this is wind- and waterproof. You should wear waterproof mountain shoes with a really good grip. In the winter, if there is a lot of ice you also need to have ice grippers but the grip walking is nice when there is not a lot of ice.
Other stuff that are good to have with a hiking day: balaclava, this will keep your head and neck warm. If you do not want a balaclava that is all over your head you can also use a turtleneck, this will keep your neck warm. If you want to rest it is good to have a seating mat, then you do not need to sit on cold snow. Also, a thermo cup with a warm drink is perfect on a cold hike. You will have some more warmth in your body.
Tip: check out the second hand stores to find cheaper options or check out discounts at sport stores. And know that Seria has a lot of clothing, a backpack or other things you can borrow. This is a good option, if you do not want to buy so much!
In your country it may not be so cold, so it is harder to get a good wool layer. It is best if you buy this when you’re in Norway. Then you can be sure you’re buying quality wool and wool that keeps you warm. A wool layer is a must if you want to go outside to the mountains or just being really long outside.
The best is to buy it in Norway, but If you don’t want to buy this then you can also just wear your warm jacket that is wind and rain proof.
This is an important layer, it is light and keeps away wind and rain. Perfect if you want to use it in different kinds of weather.
You can bring ski pants you already have at home, but you can also buy them in our country or buy them here. It depends on what you want.
